WPT Power and our local distribution partner worked with an OEM whose fitted caliper disc brake wasn’t providing consistent tension to a large paper winding drive. This application required a prolonged engagement, which caused the caliper to overheat and lose torque. This resulted in inconsistent rolls which reduced production and quality. WPT Power, our distributor, and the mill all investigated the drive details and loads, and determined that an air cooled unit, whether a caliper or multi-plate brake design, was not suitable in this tensioning application.
WPT Power identified the most effective and efficient solution, while utilizing the existing shaft size and the available dimensional envelope. The solution put into action was WPT Power’s Copper Water Cooled Brake (CWC), which are proudly built at our facility in Wichita Falls, Texas, USA. The WPT Power air tube actuated CWC provides precise engagement and torque control. In addition, it mediates the friction temperature with the constant flow of water through the brake’s integral water jackets. The cooling helps to maintain a stable friction material temperature and provides consistent performance for prolonged periods along with a greatly increased service life, which is exactly what the paper mill wanted to achieve.
WPT Power uses high grade copper plates to ensure maximum service life of the copper itself, and the opposing friction material. WPT also supplied a convenient rebuild kit to the client to make sure the brake can be quickly and efficiently serviced in the future. The price of this upgrade will be quickly offset by reduction in downtime, parts, and material waste. The overall Return on Investment (ROI) in the more efficient production flow will be realized within weeks.
