This was precisely the challenge facing an African seabed mining operation. After experiencing repeated failures with an existing water-cooled brake system, the customer turned to WPT Power to develop a more reliable, longer-lasting solution that would fit within the vessel’s extremely limited installation space.
Why are water-cooled brakes critical for marine winches?
Forward and aft deck winches perform some of the most demanding tasks aboard a vessel. Located at the bow and stern, they are responsible for anchoring, mooring, towing, line handling, and the deployment and recovery of heavy equipment. These applications require braking systems capable of delivering consistent torque while safely absorbing the heat generated during repeated braking cycles.
Water-cooled brakes are ideally suited for these demanding conditions because they continuously dissipate heat, allowing reliable operation under heavy loads while extending component life and reducing maintenance requirements.
What problem was the customer experiencing?
The vessel was equipped with two forward deck winches installed above deck and two aft winches located below deck. The existing brake system had become increasingly unreliable due to premature wear and severe corrosion. Rebuilds were required well before scheduled maintenance intervals, resulting in unexpected downtime, costly port and dry dock visits, and higher operating expenses.
To make matters worse, replacement components carried long lead times and significant costs, making routine maintenance difficult to plan and increasing the vessel’s overall lifecycle costs.
The customer needed more than a replacement brake—they needed a long-term engineering solution.
What made this application particularly challenging?
Beyond improving reliability, the replacement brake had to install directly onto the existing winches without requiring modifications to the vessel.
WPT Power’s standard mounting design matched the original backplate, with bolt pitch circle diameter (PCD) and locating pilot dimensions being an exact fit, allowing straightforward installation while exceeding the performance of the existing brake system
Although the above-deck winches provided enough clearance for WPT Power’s standard Water-Cooled Brake (WCB), the below-deck installations presented a much more difficult challenge. Available space around the brake assembly was extremely limited, preventing the use of a conventional design.
Why wouldn’t a standard water-cooled brake fit?
Traditional Water-Cooled Brake assemblies utilize threaded studs of a standard minimum length to ensure proper assembly and future rebuild procedures. In confined installations, for this to work, there needs to be a standard minimum stud length for each size and plate configuration. These studs require additional clearance that simply may not be available.
This was exactly the situation encountered on the vessel’s below-deck winches.
A conventional brake would either require modifications to the surrounding structure or compromise serviceability—neither option was acceptable.

How did WPT Power solve the problem?
WPT Power selected a 24-inch, three-plate Water-Cooled Brake equipped with its Full Marine Corrosion Protection (FMCP) package to provide maximum durability in the vessel’s corrosive operating environment.
To overcome the clearance limitations, WPT Power engineers developed an innovative compact configuration utilizing countersunk tube-style nuts within the air tube retaining plate. This design allowed significantly shorter main studs to be used while preserving the brake’s structural integrity, braking performance, and ease of future maintenance.
The result was a purpose-built solution that fit within the available installation envelope without requiring modifications to the vessel or sacrificing long-term serviceability.
What improvements did the customer achieve?
Since commissioning, the customer has experienced significant improvements across multiple performance areas, including:

The compact brake design has also proven valuable in other applications where limited installation space prevents the use of conventional brake assemblies.
