Shear Clutch and Brake Performance

Low Inertia Clutches and Brakes
Responsive Low Inertia Clutch and Brake on steel shear.

WPT Low Inertia Clutches and Brakes play a critical role in the efficient and precise operation of mechanical shears used in metal processing. As seen in the example shown above, a mechanical scrap shear is equipped with a 16” Low Inertia High-Torque Clutch and mounted to the flywheel. A 16” Low Inertia Spring-Set Brake positioned on the opposite end of the main shaft. This specific shear operates within a high-speed feed line engineered to cut brass blanks at a rate of 180 strokes per minute—an output rate necessary for the high-volume production of ammunition components.

To support such rapid and repetitive motion, the clutch and brake system must deliver fast engagement and reliable stopping with minimal lag or overrun. WPT’s Low Inertia Clutches and Brakes are intentionally built for high-cycling applications and offer reduced rotational mass during acceleration and deceleration. These units are designed with optimized mass distribution and responsive actuation, ensuring accurate timing and consistent performance under demanding operating conditions.

Available in sizes ranging from 6” to 60” in diameter, WPT’s Low Inertia product line is engineered to meet the steel and metal forming industries severe requirements of the, where precision, durability, and uptime are paramount.
